NEW
for 2012:
Using standards to improve system design
NFPA educational webinar series
Here’s your chance to learn how to use standards to design and build better fluid power systems. The National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) will present a series of
webinars that will focus on key issues facing the fluid power industry today:
• increasing energy efficiency
• improving reliability
• reducing environmental impact
• ensuring system safety
This series of six
webinars will be presented by leading experts in the standards that can help you apply fluid power more effectively and efficiently. Each
60-minute presentation will include at least 15 minutes of questions and answers; here is your chance to talk with the people who know these important standards the best. Join us for as many of the six presentations you would like. Price: NFPA members – Free / Non-members – $50 per
webinar

Schedule
January 26, 2012
(Thursday) – 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central
Safe, reliable and efficient pneumatic systems
Using ISO 4414 to design better pneumatic systems
Presenter: Gary Baumgardner, Chief Engineer, Parker Hannifin Corp.
The safety of those who work with and around machines is of ever-increasing importance in today’s business environment, as are the reliability and efficiency of those machines. ISO 4414,
Pneumatic fluid power – General rules and safety requirements for systems and their
components, provides guidance on how to design and build pneumatic systems that enhance a machine’s safety, reliability and efficiency.
March 29, 2012 (Thursday) – 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central
Selecting and Applying
Hydraulic Filters for a More Reliable System
Presenter: Leonard Bensch, Consultant, Pall
Corporation
Historically, particulate contamination in the fluid in a hydraulic system has been the major cause of component and system failure. Today, contamination control is much more a science than in the past. With the technology available today, there is no reason to continue to allow dirt to be the major machine life limiter.
Filters are installed on nearly every system with the intent to control the contamination. ISO standards exist for evaluating most performance characteristics of a filter, and a new ISO document, ISO/TR 15640, covers the general principles and guidelines for selecting and applying hydraulic filters. This webinar presents a synopsis of the new ISO document, including discussions of contamination and the damage it causes; methods of contaminant measurement and reporting; and methods for determining and setting the required cleanliness level to protect a system. Finally, guidelines are given for filter selection and application.
May 17, 2012 (Thursday) – 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central
Safe, reliable and efficient hydraulic systems
Using ISO 4413 to design better hydraulic systems
Presenter: Jerry Carlin, Chief Engineer, Eaton Corporation
Safety and design guidelines in industry are nothing new. But the latest edition of ISO 4413,
Hydraulic fluid power – General rules and safety requirements for systems and their
components, builds on past standards and expands its scope to incorporate the requirements of the European standard for the safety of hydraulic systems and to cover mobile machinery. This webinar will review ISO 4413 and give insight on key issues covered by the standard.
July 19, 2012 (Thursday) – 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central
Improving performance and protecting the environment through better system design
Using ISO and NFPA standards to prevent leakage in hydraulic systems
Presenter: Phil Robinson, Consultant, Parker Hannifin Corp.
External leakage in hydraulic systems represents not only fluid loss, with its attendant costs and safety and environmental concerns, but energy loss as well. Reliable sealing and proper system design can prevent this damaging leakage and improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of the hydraulic system. The presenter will share how ISO and NFPA standards, particularly NFPA/T2.24.2, can help people to design, build and maintain leak-free hydraulic systems.
September 18, 2012 (Tuesday) – 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central
Unlocking the mysteries of pneumatic flow rating
Using ISO 6358-1 and -2 to measure flow rating and improve pneumatic component and system performance
Presenter: John Berninger, Consultant, Parker Hannifin Corp.
The flow capacity of a pneumatic component is a key performance characteristic, and changes to ISO standards for determining flow capacity provide for greater accuracy in measuring this characteristic. This allows machine designers to more easily choose the right component for the system. This webinar will describe the new test methods in easy-to-understand terms and describe the advantages of using parameters C and b over CV¬, the parameter most commonly used North America.
November 7, 2012 (Wednesday) – 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 1:00 p.m. Central
Better contamination control through better contamination measurement
Using ISO 11500 to get more accurate data on hydraulic system contamination
Presenter: Barry Verdegan, Research Fellow, Cummins Filtration, Inc.
Particle counting properly done is a tool for managing maintenance costs and ensuring reliable operation of machinery that uses hydraulics. Particle counting done incorrectly can lead to unnecessary service or impending failure that is not detected in time. This webinar will focus on ISO 11500,
Hydraulic fluid power – Determination of particulate contamination level of a liquid sample by automatic particle counting using the light-extinction
principle. Use of ISO 11500 enables sound, data-based contamination control and service decisions, reducing operating costs and improving reliability.
