NFPA Workforce Program Manager, Lynn Beyer was a call-in on the Joy Cardin Show on National Public Radio on January 22. The topic was The Tech Race and Gender Gap and the guest speaker was Barbara Ericson, Director of Outreach, College of Computing at Georgia Tech. Lynn spoke about how the NFPA Fluid Power Challenge has helped get middle school students interested in fluid power careers and that the number of girls participating grows every year. She stated that letting students know what can be done with engineering careers and the words we use to describe these careers makes a real difference in their perception. If we use words like imaginative and collaborative, engineering has a much larger appeal to middle school students.
