NFPA Executive Leadership Participants

2020-21 Learning Objectives and Schedule

Together with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, NFPA launched the NFPA Executive Leadership Program in 2020. The first cohort consisted of a series of six full-day education sessions tailored to the needs of emerging and established leaders in the fluid power industry and took place over the course of 18 months. Learning objectives covered a wide range of topics needed for emerging leaders to take their skills to the next level, and networking opportunities associated with the program helped them forge valuable industry connections.

Fred has enjoyed the privilege of serving as an internal and external organizational architect for many of the world’s leading multi-national firms. He is a keynote speaker, executive coach, writer, and organizational consultant. He designs and implements engagements that create coaching capability, accelerate organizational transformation, bolster productive learning cultures and develop effective leaders.

Fred grew up in the New Mexico desert and has a compelling personal history in highly demanding, intensely challenging, corporate, military and athletic settings.

He served as the Chief Learning Officer and President of Motorola University, was the Senior Vice President for Leadership and Learning at Fidelity Investments and was Chief Learning Officer at Williams Energy. He began his career as an officer and pilot in the US Air Force. He flew international diplomatic missions including some that directly supported the White House. He served on the academic faculty at the USAF Academy in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. Notably, he also served as flight instructor for some of the first female pilots at the Academy.

Professor Wolcott holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management Science from NU and is an award-winning instructor, noted author, and consultant. He is an expert in corporate innovation, social innovation, emerging market strategy, and the impact of technology on established industries.

Professor of Managerial Economics & Decision Sciences Co-Director of MMM Program

Professor Bassamboo joined the faculty at the Kellogg School of Management in 2005, after completing his Ph.D. in Operations, Information and Technology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His research interests lie in the areas of service systems, revenue management and information sharing. His current research involves designing flexible service systems with a focus on capacity planning and effects of parameter uncertainty. He is also studying credibility (or lack thereof) of information provided by a service provider or a retailer to its customers.

Leigh Thompson is the J. Jay Gerber Professor of Dispute Resolution & Organizations in the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

She is the director of the Kellogg Team and Group Research Center, the Kellogg Leading High Impact Teams Executive program, and the Constructive Collaboration Executive program.

Her research focuses on negotiation skills and strategies, group decision making, creativity, and learning. Her most recent research projects include investigations into group creativity on negotiation; how teams facilitate impasse in negotiations with negative bargaining zones; and how analogical reasoning in dyads improves negotiation performance.

She has published more than 100 research articles and chapters in edited books. She has authored 9 books: Creative Conspiracy The New Rules of Breakthrough Collaboration (Harvard Business Review, 2013); The Truth About Negotiations (2nd edition, Pearson 2013); The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator (6th edition, Prentice Hall, 2015); Making The Team (5th edition, Prentice Hall, 2014); Shared Knowledge in Organizations (with David Messick and John Levine); Organizational Behavior Today (2008); Negotiation: Theory and Research (2006); The Social Psychology of Organizational Behavior: Essential Reading (2003); and Free: Costless Ways to Create Value at Work (in press, Harvard Business Review).

She is a member of the editorial boards of Organization Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Personality & Social Psychology, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, International Journal of Conflict Management, and Group Decision and Negotiation.

Peter Rea, PhD, is Vice President of Integrity and Ethics at Parker Hannifin Corporation.

Rea joined Parker in 2012 in this newly established position with the purpose of preserving Parker’s reputation and protecting its financial strength. His vision is to teach virtue in a way that adds value to Parker's 60,000 employees operating in 50 countries. His strategy is to integrate ethical action into existing programs and business goals delivered through seminars, consulting, coaching and web based instruction.

Previously, Rea was the founding Burton D. Morgan Chair for Entrepreneurial Studies and Director of Baldwin Wallace's Center for Innovation and Growth. The Center provided a practical forum for students, business leaders and business owners to create economic and social value through innovation guided by integrity.

He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Akron, a M.A. from Bowling Green State University and a B.S. from Ohio University. He has completed postdoctoral studies in international marketing and business, and marketing strategy at the University of South Carolina, Memphis University, Carnegie Mellon University and Duke University.

He co-authored Integrity is a Growth Market and Leading with Integrity with Alan Kolp. He co-authored Strategic Planning: A Practical Guide with Dr. Harold Kerzner. He also co-authored with Pierre Everaert, former Chairman of InBev and CEO of five multinationals and Alan Kolp, Igniting Innovation with Integrity: Follow the BRIC Road. Their leadership model applies the art (mindset) and science (skill set) of innovation founded on an ancient tradition of the seven classical virtues. In total, he has authored four books, the most recent being Exception to the Rule published by McGraw Hill in 2017.

Clinical Professor of Management & Organizations

Michelle Buck is a Clinical Professor of Management and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She has previously served as the School's first Director of Leadership Initiatives from 2006 to 2013, designing andcoordinating opportunities for personal leadership development to complement the School’s academic curriculum. She has also served as academic director of numerous Kellogg executive programs, including partnership programs with Fundacao dom Cabral in Brazil, programs for Latin American executives with Seminarium, as well as customized, company-specific programs.

Professor Buck teaches graduate and executive courses in leadership and negotiations. Her work in personal leadership development focuses on the importance of self-reflection and the awareness of strengths, weaknesses, values, and purpose as foundational elements of effective leadership and of management education. Her teaching also addresses the role of leadership communication in motivating and engaging others, and leadership as a relationship and the dynamics of leading and following. Professor Buck teaches Negotiations as a process of effective communication and creative problem solving, in which people are able to transform perceived conflict into new opportunities.

In executive teaching, academic direction, and consulting, Professor Buck has worked with organizations including: Banco de Mexico, Baxter International, Canadian Council for International Cooperation, CDW, Chicago Public Schools, Ernst & Young, Exelon, the FBI, Hewlett-Packard, HSBC Bank, Merck Frosst Canada, Mitsui & Co., Petro Canada, The Coca Cola Company, and YPO Latin America. She has worked extensively in the contexts of private sector business, government, nonprofit executives, and leaders of family businesses, and has presented her work in North and Latin America, Europe, and Japan.

Professor Buck previously was an Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at McGill University, teaching in their MBA programs in Montreal and Tokyo. She served as Module Director in the McGill-McConnell Program for National Voluntary Sector Leaders, an executive-level leadership development program for senior leaders of the non-profit sector in Canada, designed to facilitate leaders in creating a "more compassionate, sustainable society." She was awarded the McGill University Faculty of Management Distinguished Teaching Award in both 2001 and 1996. She also previously taught as a

Visiting Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Olin School of Business at Washington University, where she was named Teacher of the Year in the MBA Program, earning their Reid Teaching Award, in 1995. Professor Buck has a PhD and MA in Social Psychology from Princeton University, and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan.

Professor Buck's commitment in all of her work is to inspire and empower others to unleash new possibilities for themselves, for others and the communities in which they find themselves. Her work focuses on designing innovative, inspiring, and important learning experiences that transform lives by providing purpose, passion, and possibility. In addition to her professional activities, Michelle enjoys dance, music, photography, and travel, with strong interests in Latin America and Africa.

Associate Dean for Leadership Development
Clinical Professor of Management

Bernard (Bernie) Banks is a noted expert on the subjects of leadership and organizational change. Currently, he is the Associate Dean for Leadership Development and a Clinical Professor of Management at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. As an Associate Dean, Bernie possesses responsibility for leader development integration across the school's global portfolio of programs.

Bernie retired from the Army as a Brigadier General in 2016 after having successfully led West Point's Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership from 2012-2016. In addition to having studied leadership extensively, he has led multiple military units ranging in size from 10 to 500 people. In 1995, Bernie was selected from over 40,000 officers to receive the Army's top award for entry-level managers (General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award). In 2006, the Apache Helicopter unit he was leading in South Korea was designated as the top Apache Helicopter unit globally in the U.S. Army's annual best aviation unit competition.

A West Point graduate, Bernie is broadly educated. He holds graduates degrees from Northwestern, Columbia, and Harvard Universities. Additionally, he earned his Ph.D. in social-organizational psychology from Columbia University. Bernie's work has been published in a variety of outlets (e.g., Harvard Business Review, Military Psychology, New York Times). Furthermore, he has worked extensively with organizations across all sectors concerning their leader development efforts (e.g., Procter and Gamble, Mercedes Benz, General Electric, IBM, 7-Eleven, The US Forest Service, International Chiefs of Police).
