Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge: Thanks to All Who Made This Year a Success

Written by Mary Pluta | Jun 16, '26

This year’s Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge set a record, with 30 teams competing in the April Final Competitions. The program depends on the support of event hosts, suppliers, mentors, and judges across the industry, and we are grateful for their support. Sun Hydraulics in Sarasota, Florida; IFP Motion Solutions in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and IMI in Rockford, Illinois hosted the races, giving participants a firsthand look at careers in fluid power. Throughout the year, these companies partner with NFPA staff to plan the events, and additional employees help ensure the competitions run smoothly.

University teams build their vehicles with support from program sponsors that donate components and custom manifolds. Applied Fluid Power, IFP Motion Solutions, and SunSource work closely with teams to verify hydraulic circuits and ensure components perform as intended. In the process, students gain exposure to the supply chain and strengthen their business communication skills.

Teams also benefit from mentors who share technical expertise and guidance on presentations and teamwork. Each team is required to meet with its assigned industry mentor at least four times a year, but some meet more. The commitment of FPVC mentors, and that of their companies, is crucial to the success of the program.

Industry judges are equally essential. In December and January, they participated in online Midway Reviews, providing teams with valuable feedback before vehicle construction began. That guidance is especially important, as for many students the Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge is their first exposure to fluid power. In April, they travel to the competition and judge presentations and races on-site.

In all, nearly 100 professionals from NFPA member companies volunteered to inspire the next generation of fluid power engineers. Their commitment to advancing fluid power education is making a lasting impact.

One student described that impact this way: “One of the most rewarding parts of the challenge was being introduced to the hydraulic industry and building relationships with professionals who are passionate about innovation and investing in the next generation of engineers. Huge thanks to the National Fluid Power Association for creating opportunities like this.”
