The NFPA Education and Technology Foundation has awarded 20 $2,500 scholarships to students pursuing fluid power related fields of study. One of the winners, Shresth Singh, is attending Duke University. We asked Shresth a few questions about winning the scholarship.

What does winning a Fluid Power Scholarship mean to you?

It is a real honor to be recognized by such a large organization. I had applied to so many scholarships, and honestly, I was unsure if I would win anything at all. However, when I heard the news about this award, I felt vindicated — my efforts had meant something! This recognition gives me confidence as I move forward in my academic and professional journey.

Why did you choose to learn about fluid power?

As an aspiring mechanical engineer with a focus in aerospace engineering, I recognize the necessity of fluid power and hydraulics. They are essential for flight control surfaces (ailerons, elevators, rudder), wing flaps and slats, braking systems, thrust reversers, landing gear, and cargo doors. As a result, being recognized by an organization that directly supports my career path is a great honor.

What are your career aspirations? What type of fluid power job do you hope to get after you graduate?

I aspire to bring back the supersonic commercial plane — a goal that will require significant engineering innovation. My deepest interest lies in becoming a propulsion engineer and using my fluid power knowledge to help accelerate the future to Mach 1. I want to contribute to a future where advanced fluid systems help redefine speed and possibility in air travel.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0, 500-word essay, and letter of recommendation were required from each applicant. The NFPA Foundation’s goal is to help graduating high school students, and individuals enrolled in community colleges, technical schools and universities pursue their academic interests in fluid power.

One way NFPA members can get involved with scholarship programs is to volunteer as a judge to serve on the application review committee. This year 34 judges from 26 NFPA member companies reviewed 241 eligible student applications to the Fluid Power Scholarship program.
