NFPA Standards Roundup: December Recap and Insights

Written by Ben Brown | Jan 21, '26

Hello again everybody, and welcome to the fourth entry in the NFPA Standards Roundup article series! Once a month, we will be releasing an article providing a high-level recap of the monthly activities.

From this point on, these articles will be more jargon-heavy and, in some cases, technical. If you have any questions about what these things mean, or interest in participating in this important task, please contact Ben Brown at bbrown@nfpa.com

As anticipated, December was another calm month in the world of ISO/TC 131. We only had one meeting for SC 9/WG 2 (Installations and Systems, Pneumatics Systems), though this meeting was a full one. 17 participants from 6 countries joined to discuss the ongoing development of ISO 25167 and 25168, both related to energy efficiency. Thank you to everybody who participated and is contributing to the development of these standards!

Additionally, the next round of In-Person meetings in Milan, Italy are approaching in May! With this, the scheduling process has begun, and we are working hard to ensure that every Subcommittee and Working Group has the opportunity to meet in this time. Please note, since each group meets a maximum of one time per year In-Person, the focus will be on the SCs and WGs that do not traditionally meet in the Fall window. Pneumatics companies in particular should be preparing, as the bulk of in-person work in that realm takes place in the Spring.

We also saw the closure of two ballots, the results of which are below.

  • SC 3 (Cylinders): Resolution 01/2025, Appointment of SC 3/WG 2 Convenor – Ballot has passed and Elvira Rakova has been elected as new convenor. Congratulations, Elvira!
  • SC 5 (Control Products [Valves]): ISO 11727:1999 SR – Proposal to open for updates, final decision is pending.

On top of these updates, work is continuing across our 71 active projects (updates, new proposals, and systematic reviews) as usual. If you are interested in participating in Standard Development, either at the TAG or ISO level, please contact Ben Brown at bbrown@nfpa.com.
