NFPA Standards Roundup: July + August Recap and Insights

Hello again everybody, and welcome to the newest entry in the NFPA Standards Roundup article series! Each month, we provide a high-level recap of the latest standards development activities across ISO/TC 131.

Due to some delays by a certain author (who will remain unnamed), the recap article for July and August will be consolidated into a single entry. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

These two months saw 3 Working Group Meetings, as well as additional decisions being made for the upcoming TC 131 Meeting Cluster, taking place in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Working Group Meetings:

SC 4/WG 4: Hydraulic and pneumatic quick-action couplings

Conversation in this meeting focused around development of ISO/TS 22265 (Quick Release Couplers Best Practices – Correct installation, use and maintenance suggested guidelines).

Having received nearly 70 comments, the conversation was substantive with consensus reached across the board. The Project Leader will be making the proposed updates by the end of September to be re-circulated among the Working Group.

When ready, this document will be moved along to the DIS stage. This group is planning to meet next, In-Person, in the Spring Meeting cluster.

SC 7/WG 3: Design criteria for standard O-ring applications

There was substantial conversation regarding updates to ISO 3601-5 (Fluid power systems – O-rings – Part 5: Specification of elastomeric materials for industrial applications). A brief list of outcomes from this conversation is below:

  • Low Temperature Materials will be listed, including:
    • NBR 70, NBR 90, HNBR 70, HNBR 90, FKM 70, and FKM.
    • Experts will be providing temperature limits for these additions.
  • Additional Hardness Groups will be listed, including:
    • NBR 80, HNBR 70, HNBR 80, AEM 70, and FKM.
    • Debate on adding NBR 60 and HNBR 60 is ongoing.
  • Discussion on whether hardness ranges should replace hardness classes:
    • Experts are checking into feasibility of these updates.

Additionally, there have been significant updates to ISO/TR 26033 (Hydraulic fluid power – O-rings – Choice, control and management of supplies), an updated draft will be circulated for comments.

This group is planning a full day of meetings in the upcoming Fall Meeting Cluster.

SC 6/WG 2: Hydraulic filter evaluation, cleanliness methods, and contamination analysis

The bulk of this conversation was focused around comments from the Working Group Consultation for ISO 3722 (Hydraulic fluid power – Fluid sample containers – Qualifying and controlling cleaning methods).

Kicked off by an in-depth presentation explaining the lot-by-lot sampling and inspection processes as described in ISO 2859-1 (Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes – Part 1: Sampling schemes indexed by acceptance quality limit [AQL] for lot-by-lot inspection), the Working Group discussed to what extent information should be duplicated, with a shared goal of maximizing readability and utility. The consensus was to reduce the duplicated information, optimize the referenced tables for industry-specific parameters, and include informative annexes to provide clarifying examples for users. Technical conversation based on feedback is continuing.

There was a presentation on the development of ISO 11943-2 (Hydraulic fluid power – Online automatic particle-counting systems for liquids – Part 2: Methods of performing calibration), clarifying updates to the acceptance criteria and shift to confidence intervals. Multiple examples were provided based on lab data submitted by experts, though additional data using Ultra Fine Testing Dust is requested.

There is also substantial debate regarding a possible new project related to Dynamic Imaging Analysis (DIA). Experts are split as to whether a new standard is required, a new part of an existing standard, or if information can be added to already existing standards. The Project Leadership team is planning separate meetings to build plan next steps.

This group is also planning a full day of meetings in the upcoming Fall Meeting Cluster.

The development and approval process for SRM 2806e has been completed and can be purchased here.

Fall Meeting Cluster

The location for the upcoming Fall Meeting Cluster has been confirmed for Istanbul, Türkiye, and will be taking place the week of October 19th. 14 groups are planning to meet, across every subject area with the exception of pneumatics and connectors.
