A team of students from the University of Cincinnati has created a pneumatic arcade racing simulator to make learning about fluid power more engaging and accessible for high school and university students. Funded by the NFPA Foundation and mentored by NFPA members, Poclain Hydraulics and GPM Controls, this project transforms how students explore pneumatics. By converting motion data from racing simulations into real-time chair movements, the simulator turns abstract concepts like pressure control and force generation into tangible, interactive lessons—sparking curiosity and deeper understanding.
Beyond the classroom, the project addresses a growing need in the workforce by introducing students to fluid power early in their education.
As industries increasingly rely on these systems for automation, sustainability, and innovation, exposing students to real-world applications
prepares them for careers at NFPA member companies.
The impact of this project extends even further, as the full project description, instructions, and bill of materials are now available as an open resource on the NFPA’s website. Educators and student organizations across the country can use these materials to replicate the simulator in their own programs, fostering collaboration and innovation.
In addition to this project, UC has developed and launched a brand-new, 3-credit elective course on fluid power technology, enrolling its first cohort of 20 students who are now gaining direct, hands-on experience in a subject previously untaught at the university. This is a powerful reminder of what happens when industry and education collaborate.
