Recent Trends in PPI Data for Fluid Power and End-Use Markets

The latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the year-over-year (Y/Y) percentage change in the Producer Price Index (PPI) for fluid power equipment remains highly reactive. As shown in the first chart, the index experienced two significant peaks—both hitting 14.4% in July 2022 and April 2023—before declining sharply toward the end of 2023 and into early 2024. The Y/Y % continued to show volatility in early 2025, currently sitting at 5.04%. This graph clearly illustrates not only the sharp recent fluctuations but also how historically elevated those changes have been compared to the previous decade.

In comparison, we can look at a few popular end-use industries for fluid power. Below, you can see the producer price index, graphed with a year-over-year % change, for construction machinery, farm machinery, and automotive.

Construction and farm machinery followed a similar trajectory—peaking in mid-to-late 2022 and trending downward throughout 2023 and early 2024. Automotive manufacturing displayed more muted movement but began to trend back upwards throughout 2024 and entering 2025.
