NFPA Standards Roundup: September Recap and Insights

Hello again everybody, and welcome to the newest entry in the NFPA Standards Roundup article series! Each month, we provide a high-level recap of the latest standards development activities across ISO/TC 131.

September was a quiet month on the ISO/TC 131 side of things, but featured significant preparation work for the upcoming In-Person Meeting Cluster in Istanbul. Of note, US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to SC 4 and US TAG to SC 6 met to discuss the current state of these SCs and projects. While technically taking place in very early October, US TAG to SC 7 also met to prepare for Istanbul.

TAG Meetings:

US TAG to SC 4:

Conversation in this meeting focused around a few key standards, beginning with ISO/CD 8434-1 (Metallic tube connections for fluid power and general use — Part 1: 24° cone connectors). Multiple issues have been identified regarding tolerance stackups, and the WG has proposed updates to the current HEX sizes. The TAG is putting together a task force to investigate the proposals further, in order to effectively respond in the Spring 2027 Meeting Cluster.

ISO 11926-1 (Connections for general use and fluid power — Ports and stud ends with ISO 725 threads and O-ring sealing — Part 1: Ports with O-ring seal in truncated housing) updates were also discussed, with a focus on changes to edge radius, roughness, and the L1 thread.

Finally, this group reviewed the extensive conversation around ISO/TS 22265 (Quick Release Couplers Best Practices — Correct installation, use and maintenance suggested guidelines). The significance in scope for this project was re-iterated, and all companies that manufacture Quick Release Couplers should be monitoring the discussion.

US TAG to SC 6:

Conversation began regarding updates to the development for SRM 2806f, which is progressing well. 14 sets of data were used in the round robin lab study to test this material. Data provided to the group indicates very high levels of agreement between this and SRM 2806e, while still maintaining distinct characteristics.

Estimates are the development is 80-90% complete, with release anticipated in early 2027. Availability will be similar to that of SRM 2806e.

More conversation revolved around ISO 11943-2 (Hydraulic fluid power — Online automatic particle-counting systems for liquids — Part 2: Methods of performing calibration). Additional data was shared, and another call for collaboration, particularly in regards to UFTD, has been has shared.

There was more discussion regarding the potential for a new Dynamic Imaging Analysis standard, with a strong preference for additional information on this technology and intended scope to be shared. Deeper conversation is anticipated in Istanbul.

Additionally, ISO 16889 (Hydraulic fluid power — Filters — Multi-pass method for evaluating filtration performance of a filter element) and ISO 23369 (Hydraulic fluid power — Multi-pass method of evaluating filtration performance of a filter element under cyclic flow conditions) have been opened for revision. Changes are anticipated to be primarily editorial, but capacities may also be changed.

Finally, a number of leadership changes are expected to be discussed in this group, and others.

Between SC 6/WG 2, and SC 6 proper, there will be 1.5 days of meetings in Istanbul.

US TAG to SC 7:

This conversation overwhelmingly revolved around ongoing activity in ISO/TC 131/SC 7/WG 3. Previous meetings have proposed substantial updates for ISO 3601-5 (Fluid power systems – O-rings – Part 5: Specification of elastomeric materials for industrial applications.

ISO/TR 26033 (Hydraulic fluid power – O-rings – Choice, control, and management of supplies) is the other primary focus at this point in time.

For more information on these, check out our previous Standards Recap article here.

Between the two Working Groups and SC 7 proper, there will be 2 days of meetings in Istanbul.

The development and approval process for SRM 2806e has been completed and can be purchased here.

Fall Meeting Cluster

The location for the upcoming Fall Meeting Cluster has been confirmed for Istanbul, Türkiye, and will be taking place the week of October 19th. 14 groups are planning to meet, across every subject area with the exception of pneumatics and connectors.

If you are interested in participating in standards development—either at the TAG or ISO level—or would like more information on any of these activities, please reach out to Ben Brown at bbrown@nfpa.com.
